Chandler, Arizona

How a Special Education Advocate in Chandler Helps

Chandler has grown quickly, and its special education teams have grown with it. Rapid growth creates a specific problem: caseloads climb faster than staffing, and the families who feel it first are the ones whose children need the most consistency.

Most Chandler students attend Chandler Unified School District, one of the largest districts in Arizona, with a strong reputation and a wide range of programs. A good district is still a large bureaucracy. When your child needs a specific service, the quality of the IEP document determines whether that service follows them from campus to campus and grade to grade.

We work with Chandler families on initial evaluations, eligibility disputes, behavior plans, related services and transition planning. We also help families whose children attend charter schools or private schools in Chandler, where the obligations are different and often misunderstood.

If your child changes schools inside CUSD, the IEP travels with them, but implementation does not always follow. We help families build plans that survive transitions between elementary, middle and high school.

What Chandler Parents Ask Us About

  • The school wants to move my child from a self-contained setting to a resource model. What should I ask?
  • My child’s behavior plan was written two years ago and has never been updated.
  • The district says my child does not qualify for speech because scores are “in the average range.”
  • My child is in a charter school that says it cannot provide the services on the IEP.
  • We requested an evaluation in writing and never received a response.
  • The IEP lists 30 minutes of counseling per week but the counselor has not seen my child in a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you attend CUSD IEP meetings in person?

Yes. We attend in person throughout Chandler and the East Valley, and by video when that is more convenient for your family.

Can my Chandler charter school refuse to provide IEP services?

No. Charter schools are public schools and must provide a free appropriate public education, including the services on a valid IEP. If a charter says it cannot, that is a compliance issue worth documenting.

How long does an initial evaluation take in Arizona?

Arizona requires the evaluation to be completed within 60 calendar days of parental consent, with limited exceptions. Missing that timeline is a documented compliance concern.

What is the difference between resource and self-contained placement?

Resource placement means your child spends most of the day in general education with support. Self-contained means a specialized classroom for most of the day. Placement should follow the IEP, not the other way around.
